My name is Paul Perkins Founder and President of United Technician Group I got my start in the Auto repair industry as soon as i completed high school. I attended and graduated from NASCAR Technical Institute with a Automotive technology degree. I have worked as a Mechanic at various Independent shops and Dealerships for the last 15 years. One recurring theme I noticed is that the pay system SUCKS and is not in our favor. It is often very much in the favor of the shop owner but NOT for the Skilled workers, you the mechanic. Being a Mechanic is a very rewarding job but can also be very stressful because the pay system instituted by Dealers and shop owners and it's for one reason, Flat Rate Pay. New Techs coming out of school are leaving in droves once they find out how little the pay can be on top of having to invest in and supply your own tools. Starting out you are likely to have a large tool bill due every month. You are likely to always have to deal with dishonest and in experienced shop owners and service advisors, poorly run service departments not set up in your favor for Flat Rate pay, pestering tool salesmen trying to sell you expensive tools you may not need and general shop politics.
